Is Aquamarine Jewelry Expensive?

Clear and transparent blue and blue green identifies aquamarine; the deeper the color the better. This gemstone gets its color from the iron within the stone. Occasionally other minerals are in the stone producing an effect that is known as “cat’s eye.”  There is a premium price for Aquamarine gems which produces such an effect.

Generally Aquamarine jewelry is not expensive even in the most vivid of color. The cut is less important in determining price. Those stones which are pale or with just a little blue tinge are of little value if untreated. There are also deposits of Aquamarine that are yellow, notably those originating in Sri Lanka, though the yellow, pale stones are of considerably less value. Low grade aquamarine requires heat treatment to increase its value.  When this gemstone is heated to between 400 – 450C it can improve the color, and actually turn the yellow deposits into a good shade of blue. It is important not to overheat the stone because that leads to discoloration.

It is the depth of color that marks Aquamarine out as a popular gemstone with Aquamarine rings a particular favorite. This gemstone is a favorite of designers too as it lends itself to a variety of modern and traditional cuts. The fact that it is relatively inexpensive and fairly hard means that a cutter of the gem is under far less pressure fashioning your aquamarine than many of the more valuable stones.
